The robots are not coming for your job

Part 1: Hybrid Solutions

Artificial Intelligence is set to become one of the most disruptive forces of the coming century, but when it comes to automation, its impact may be far different to what some are expecting. In the coming months we will be publishing three AI whitepapers in the series titled 'The robots are not coming for your job'.

Part 1 of this series explores historical attitudes towards automation and AI, and examines how technological advancements often lead to the formation of 'hybrid solutions' between humans and technology.

We also delve into some of the technical differences between AI, ML, algorithms, and models, and the different approaches to machine learning.

Part 2: Comparing Performance

Artificial intelligence's (AI) ability to make someone believe that they are talking to a real human has already become eerily convincing. Its automation, adoption, and integration is continuous and often unnoticed. Tech giants are developing purpose built AI software and the pace of innovation is accelerating.

Part two of this series introduces a matrix that uses accuracy and efficiency as two key metrics to compare the way humans and AI approach, perform, and optimise particular tasks. We then use this matrix to categorise tasks as human or AI specialties, allowing us to better imagine the way humans will work alongside AI in future ‘hybrid solutions’.

Part 3: Ethics

AI is one of the most versatile tools ever developed. It can supplement human activities in practically any field. Because of this, the ethical implications can be as complex and varied as AI solutions themselves. AI is already being used to approve bank loans, discover cancers, and shape the result of elections. Applications such as these have spurred calls for greater transparency of AI solutions, the data they use, and how that data is sourced.

Part 3 of this series takes a broader look at the impact AI is having on individuals, organisations, and wider society, and takes a deep dive into the emerging concept of Explainable AI - a new way of thinking that aims to make AI more transparent.
